Many who visit Rapid City try to schedule their stay around one of our big events! These events include the biggest motorcycle rally, Rodeos and western trade shows, seasonal and festive events as well as free events in Downtown Rapid City.
1 - Black Hills Powwow
As one of the premier cultural events in the Black Hills, the Black Hills Powwow features a variety of dancers and events. This event attracts hundreds of spectators from around the world.
2 - Crazy Horse Volksmarch
Crazy Horse host a Volksmarch in the Spring and Fall. Hikers climb to the arm of Crazy Horse for a close up of the largest mountain carving in progress during this unique experience.
3 - Black Hills Stock Show & Rodeo
The Black Hills Stock Show & Rodeo® is the second largest event in the state of South Dakota following the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. An estimated attendance of 331,000 people attend the ten day event held annually the last weekend in January to the first weekend in February.
The stock show features 96 different agriculture driven events. Events such as the Ranch Rodeo and Sheep Dog Trials are crowd favorites. Other events include a two-day horse, ten breeds of cattle shows and sales, the Cinch Trade Show, Buffalo Sale, World's Smallest Rodeo, Sheep Shearing demonstration, Ag Leaders Round-Table Discussion, Ranch Horse Competition, AQHA Horse Shows, Commercial Heifer Show and Sale and much more.
4 - Stratobowl Historic Hot Air Balloon Launch
Located fourteen minutes outside of Rapid City on Highway 16 sits the historic Stratobowl. This spot was the location of the Army Air Corps and National Geographic Society’s 1934 and 1935 manned balloon flights that launched into the stratosphere to a record 72,395 feet. Now, every year in September ten to twelve experienced balloonists gather to celebrate the anniversary of that historic flight. Spectators watch as balloons float out of the valley of the Stratobowl and over the tree tops of the Black Hills. This event goes for an entire weekend with balloon launches taking place Friday morning, Saturday morning and again on Sunday.
5 - Mount Rushmore Lighting Ceremony
This nightly ceremony takes place every summer beginning in May and ending in September. The event features a video about the history of the monument, honors veterans in attendance and gives all who attend the magnificent experience of viewing Mount Rushmore lit up against the night sky.
6 - Sturgis Motorcycle Rally
The Sturgis® Motorcycle Rally is the experience of a lifetime in a place where local people can still show you a thing or two about hospitality and visiting exhibitors can show you anything and everything you’d want or need to dress you up or dress up your bike. Or heck, demo virtually every kind of bike on the market - custom, V-Twin or metric. It’s like being a kid again, in a candy store. Only better! Because in addition to the bikes there are concerts and races and bike shows, five blocks of Main Street bikes-only street vibe, the Annual Mayor’s Ride, Michael Lichter’s annual exhibit, the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame, organized rides, some pretty impressive watering holes, custom legends, blue skies and warm, sunny days.
7 - Summer Nights
Summer Nights is a FREE event for all ages, every Thursday in downtown Rapid City! There's no better way to experience the vibrant nightlife of Rapid City!
8 - Bierborse
Beer lovers, this is your event. During this event Main Street Square transforms into a little slice of Germany. Sample a selection of over 82 beers from local breweries, treat yourself to a schnitzel and test your strength in a stein holding competition. Bierborse translates to beer stock exchange, meaning the price of beer during throughout this event will vary. The beers that are popular will rise in price, while the less popular beers prices with drop.
9 - Central States Fair
Neon lights illuminate the sky during the summer fun at the Central States Fair. Enjoy a night of ferris wheels, tilt-a-whirls and fun houses or catch a concert during this week long event. Don't forget to treat yourself to a funnel cake or some deep fried oreos too!
10 - Hills Alive Festival
20,000 people will gather each day in Rapid City to enjoy the annual FREE Christian festival, which will feature some of the top names in the Christian music industry. There will be activities for the entire family including inflatables and KidZjam shows for children. The festival will be complete with food vendors and merchandise vendors. You won't want to miss this event!!
