Wind Cave National Park (Maka Oniye)
Distance from Rapid City: 1 hour (58 miles)
About an hour southwest of Rapid City, and just minutes from Custer State Park, the earth opens into one of the most fascinating underground worlds on the planet. Wind Cave National Park was the first cave to become a national park and is home to one of the longest and most complex cave systems in the world. Here, adventure stretches far beyond the surface, where rolling prairie landscapes above ground give way to a hidden labyrinth of narrow passageways, rare geological formations, and stories rooted deep within the land itself.
Above ground, the park’s 28,000 acres of mixed-grass prairie feel wonderfully untamed. Bison roam freely across open fields, elk move quietly through the hills, and miles of hiking trails wind through ponderosa pine forests and sweeping prairie vistas. Visitors can spend the day hiking, wildlife watching, picnicking, or camping beneath some of the darkest skies in the region. But beneath the surface is where Wind Cave truly reveals its mystery.
Ranger-guided cave tours lead visitors deep underground through winding corridors filled with delicate boxwork formations, an incredibly rare cave feature found here in greater abundance than almost anywhere else in the world. Around every corner, the cave feels ancient, quiet, and alive, shaped over millions of years beneath the Black Hills.
For many Native American tribes, Wind Cave is far more than a geological wonder. Known as Maka Oniye, meaning “the Earth is breathing,” the cave is considered one of the most sacred places in the Black Hills. Tribal oral traditions tell of Wind Cave as the place where Native people emerged from the spirit world into the physical world, connecting generations to this landscape through stories, spirituality, and deep reverence for the land. Today, that powerful connection continues to shape the experience of visiting Wind Cave, where every step underground feels tied to something far older and greater than ourselves.
