Jewel Cave National Monument

Distance from Rapid City: 1 hour (54 miles)

Hidden beneath the southern Black Hills, Jewel Cave National Monument is a world of mystery, wonder, and endless discovery. Located less than an hour southwest of Rapid City and just a short drive from Wind Cave National Park, Jewel Cave is the third-longest cave in the world, with more than 200 miles of mapped passageways and still growing. In fact, explorers continue uncovering an average of three new miles each year, revealing that this underground labyrinth is far from finished.

Step below the surface and enter a landscape unlike anywhere else in the Black Hills. Massive chambers, twisting tunnels, and intricate rock formations stretch deep beneath the forested hills above. The cave earned its name from the dazzling calcite crystals that shimmer across the walls, ceilings, and floors, catching the light like hidden gemstones tucked beneath the earth. Every turn feels like stepping deeper into an underground cathedral shaped over millions of years.

Above ground, ponderosa pine forests and rolling hills surround the monument, creating a striking contrast to the vast world hidden below. Together, they tell a story of the Black Hills that reaches far beyond what you can see on the surface, where adventure continues underground in one of the planet’s most extraordinary cave systems.
