While we have several local options for public and ride-share transportation, most visitors find it easiest and most economical to rent a vehicle. It's important to note that to rent a car within the United States, you will need to already have a driver’s license issued by your home country.
Rapid City Regional Airport has several car rental providers available near baggage claim, but it's recommended that a reservation is made in advance.
What is the best time to visit Rapid City?
This is a tough question as all our seasons provide amazing things to see and do. We see 226 days of sunshine per year. Our most popular time tends to be the summer months between May through August as our city offers 15-16 hours of sunlight and average temperatures between 55°F (13°C) and 82°F (28°C).
How many days should I stay in Rapid City?
We recommend 5-7 days at least. One of the things we hear the most from visitors is "I didn't realize how much there is to do around here!". With Rapid City being your hub of travel throughout the Black Hills, there are 10 parks and monuments to visit, countless attractions, and a foodie scene that can't be appreciated in just a couple of days. To be honest with you, a full week still might not capture it all, but we guarantee it'll be one memorable vacation.
What time zone is Rapid City in?
Rapid City is in the Mountain Standard Time Zone (MST) (Greenwich Mean Time [GMT] minus six hours during daylight saving time, from March through November, and minus seven hours the rest of the year). We are in the same time zone as Denver and Salt Lake City.
What local laws should I know?
If you're headed out for a night on the town, you should know that the drinking age in South Dakota – and throughout the United States – is 21, and smoking is banned indoors throughout the city, including bars, restaurants, and public transportation. Cigar smoking is permitted at dedicated cigar bars. Unlike most of the rest of the country, only those aged 21 and older purchase cigarettes and tobacco in South Dakota.
