Stratobowl Historic Hot Air Balloon Launch

September 6, 7, and 8, 2024

Located just a short fourteen-minute drive from Rapid City on Highway 16, the Stratobowl holds a rich piece of aerospace history. This serene valley was the liftoff site for the record-breaking balloon flights by the Army Air Corps and National Geographic Society in 1934 and 1935. Their daring ascent into the stratosphere made history and captured the first-ever photograph of the Earth’s curvature. For an in-depth dive into the history of the Stratobowl's groundbreaking flights, check out our blog that shares how the Stratobowl became the birthplace of the Space Age.

Now, the Stratobowl transforms every September into an iconic launching pad to celebrate of this milestone with the Stratobowl Historic Hot Air Balloon Launch. Over an entire weekend, ten to twelve seasoned balloonists gather for a breathtaking sunrise flight, lifting out from the bottom of valley they ascend gracefully above the pine-covered walls of the Black Hills and over the heads of spectators.

Plan to arrive early and prepare for a short hike along the Stratobowl Rim Trail to reach the ideal vantage point. Remember to bring flashlights, blankets, chairs, and wear layers as September mornings can be chilly. This rustic event is all about simplicity – there are no vendors or bathrooms on-site, so pack snacks and drinks and be sure to practice "leave no trace" principles when the event concludes.
