There’s nothing like the rumble of your bike echoing through canyons and pine-covered hills. During the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, the Black Hills transform into a rider’s paradise – twisty roads, epic scenery and routes that are as legendary as the Rally itself. Whether you’re chasing curves, chasing views or just out to enjoy the ride, this region offers some of the most iconic cruising in the country.
Here are five unforgettable routes to ride while you’re visiting. Each offers a different kind of ride, but all pure Black Hills beauty.

Badlands Loop Road (SD-240)
Distance: ~39 miles
Kick things off with a cruise through a place that feels like another planet. The Badlands Loop Road winds through rugged cliffs, deep canyons and strange rock formations that shift colors with the light. This route is made for slow rolls and scenic pullouts. Don’t miss stops like Panorama Point and Big Badlands Overlook!
Ride it at sunrise or sunset when the landscape glows red and gold. Traffic is lighter and the views are unreal. Or go when it rains to see the layered formation’s bold colors.

Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway (US-14A)
Distance: ~19 miles
Carved by ancient waters and lined with waterfalls, Spearfish Canyon is a Rally favorite for good reason. The canyon walls rise high around you as you cruise past pine forests, streams and photo-worthy stops like Bridal Veil Falls.
This road is pure flow — gentle curves, cool shade and that peaceful feeling of riding through nature. Go early or late in the day for fewer cars and a calmer ride.

Peter Norbeck Scenic Byway
Distance: ~68 miles (loop)
This loop is legendary with some serious twists and turns. It links up several famous roads, including Iron Mountain Road and Needles Highway, for a ride that’s packed with tunnels, switchbacks and sweeping views.
You'll curve through forests, climb into granite peaks and pass through rock tunnels that perfectly frame Mount Rushmore. Traffic can be slow during Rally week, but that just gives you more time to soak up the views.

Needles Highway (SD-87)
Distance: ~14 miles
Needles Highway is short, slow and absolutely unforgettable. It’s the perfect option if you’re on a time crunch and can’t ride the full Peter Norbeck Scenic Byway, but still want dramatic views and tight, technical turns. You’ll ride through towering granite spires, edge through narrow tunnels (like the famous Needles Eye Tunnel) and tackle curves that keep you focused and fully in the moment.
Traffic can back up here during Rally week, but that just gives you time to take in the views. This is one of those rides where you don’t mind going slow.

US Highway 385
Distance: ~102 miles (full)
Highway 385 runs the spine of the Black Hills, connecting towns like Hot Springs, Custer, Hill City and Deadwood. It’s one of the best ways to get a feel for the region’s forests, open meadows and wide bends that are easy to relax into, even when the road is busy.
It’s a great “connect-the-dots” highway for planning your day. Whether you’re headed to Mount Rushmore, grabbing lunch in Hill City or rolling into Deadwood for a night out.
Every rider carves out their own Rally story, and these routes are where a lot of the best ones begin. From the surreal landscape of the Badlands to the granite spires of the Needles, every mile in the Black Hills has something to say.
Ride smart, be patient and don’t worry about the pace. Some of the best Rally memories happen when you slow down and take it all in.
