Q&A with Jaderian Brown

What brought you to Rapid City, and what stood out to you most during your visit?
I was drawn to Rapid City for its mix of adventure, beauty and genuine hospitality. I’d heard about the Black Hills and the amazing landscapes, but what stood out most was the sense of peace and connection you feel here — it’s a place that feels both grounded and inspiring at the same time.

Was there a moment or experience that really captured the spirit of the city for you?
Absolutely. Walking through downtown during a local event and seeing how everyone came together — families, artists, and small businesses — really captured the heart of Rapid City for me. There’s a strong sense of community and pride here that you can feel right away.

What surprised you most about Rapid City or the Black Hills?
I was surprised by how diverse the landscape is — one moment you’re surrounded by rugged granite peaks, and the next you’re in open plains with wild buffalo roaming. It’s truly breathtaking. And the history woven into every part of the region makes it even more special.

How would you describe Rapid City to someone who’s never been here?
It’s where nature, art and community all meet. Rapid City has this unique balance — small-town warmth with big adventure just minutes away. It’s a place that leaves you feeling refreshed and inspired.

What’s one thing you’d tell someone planning their first trip to Rapid City?
Take your time. Don’t just rush from one landmark to the next — slow down, explore the local shops and cafes, talk to the people and let the city surprise you. There’s so much depth here beyond the incredible scenery.

What local spot or experience made you feel most connected to the community?
The Art Alley downtown really stood out to me. It’s creative, bold and constantly evolving — just like the people here. It felt like a visual expression of the city’s spirit: open, expressive and full of heart.

If you had one extra day here, what would you spend it doing?
I’d spend it exploring more of the Black Hills — maybe hiking around Sylvan Lake or catching the sunset at Mount Rushmore. It’s the kind of place where every corner feels like a postcard moment, and one more day never feels like enough.

Meet Matthew from Colorado Springs, CO

Matthew first passed through Rapid City on a cross-country road trip before calling it home for two years. His winning photo captures the natural rhythm of Spearfish Canyon, where towering limestone walls, rushing water and bursts of color create one of the most breathtaking settings in the Black Hills.

Q&A with Matthew Barroner

What brought you to Rapid City, and what stood out to you most during your visit?
I came through Rapid City on a cross-country road trip in 2021 and had the pleasure of living there for two years afterwards. What stands out most is the access to nature — from beautiful city parks to epic hikes in the Black Hills.

Was there a moment or experience that really captured the spirit of the city for you?
A particular experience would be the Mountain Photo Competition at the Dahl. Seeing all the great local photographers in one place showcasing their love for the city and the region was heartwarming. I also loved the rodeo, especially seeing how the city retains its western charm.

What surprised you most about Rapid City or the Black Hills?
Just how rugged the terrain is. Whether that’s in the Badlands or along the Needles Highway, I never expected South Dakota to have such awesome terrain.

How would you describe Rapid City to someone who’s never been here?
Rapid City is a hidden gem! The food, the hikes and the sights are all world-class with small-town charm.

What’s one thing you’d tell someone planning their first trip to Rapid City?
Take it slow and you'll find that there are hidden gems everywhere. Everyone knows about Mount Rushmore, but there are hundreds of spots that go under the radar. Just be willing to drive slow and let the experiences find you.

What local spot or experience made you feel most connected to the community?
The camaraderie during the winter months. While cold, that doesn’t prevent locals from ice skating in Main Street Square or grabbing drinks on the rooftop of Vertex. Having spent two winters in Rapid City, I really felt connected to the community when the tourist season died down and the locals continued to enjoy this place called home.

If you had one extra day here, what would you spend it doing?
If I had one extra day, I would definitely grab some coffee at Harriet & Oak, go for a hike in the Black Hills, and finish it with some pizza from Pour 54. I’d also love to get my hands on a torch for the Burning Beetle down in Custer too.
