Every autumn, downtown Rapid City transforms into a swirling, pumpkin-scented wonderland, and you need to dive right in! The Great Downtown Pumpkin Festival isn’t just the biggest event of the year. It’s the ultimate love letter to fall, wrapped in orange, sprinkled with cinnamon and tied together with a crisp September breeze.
A Giant Pumpkin Showdown
Let’s start with the Giant Pumpkin Weigh-Off — an official Commonwealth Great Pumpkin Weigh-Off site. That means every gourd that hits the scale here has the chance to make history, with weights counting toward national and world records on the global leaderboard. These results go on a global leaderboard! These aren’t your grocery store pumpkins. These are jaw-dropping, how-do-you-even-move-that behemoths battling for bragging rights. The air is thick with suspense (and maybe a little pumpkin spice) as growers wait to see if their gourd tips the scale into legend status. Registration is from 8 to 10 a.m. the day of!
Pumpkins That Fly
At Pumpkin Chunkin’, pumpkins take flight, quite literally. Local students from South Dakota Mines load these unsuspecting orange orbs into trebuchets, pull the trigger and send them soaring across Memorial Park. It’s part science, part spectacle and entirely hilarious.
Pumpkins as Art
Show off your own pumpkin masterpiece in the Pumpkin Decorating Contest. Whether yours is painted, carved, glittered or bedazzled beyond recognition, drop it off by 10 a.m. and let the crowd decide if you’re this year’s pumpkin Picasso.
A Kid’s Fall Paradise
The Kidz Zone is the happiest corner of the festival. Picture jumping castles bouncing with laughter, tiny hands covered in paint from mini pumpkin masterpieces and the fan-favorite 4 Buck Chuck pumpkin toss that’s equal parts skill and silliness. Plus, the Touch-a-Truck experience means little ones can climb, honk and explore big trucks like they own the place.
Scarecrows on Parade
The Downtown Business Scarecrow Contest is proof that scarecrows are fashion icons in their own right. Some are funny, some are fabulous, some are… creatively questionable. Cast your vote at the Visitor Center or through the Visit Rapid City App and help crown the season’s scarecrow superstar.
Seasonal Sips for the Adults
Starting at noon, the Pumpkin Pub Crawl invites guests 21+ to enjoy autumn-themed drinks at downtown’s best bars and restaurants. It’s the perfect way to add a little spice, pumpkin or otherwise, to your day. Participating bars and restaurants to be announced!
Live Music at the Square
As if giant pumpkins and flying gourds weren’t enough, Main Street Square will be rocking all afternoon with the Wilt Brothers Band. Their high-energy blend of country and rock ’n’ roll is the perfect soundtrack for a fall day in downtown Rapid City. Grab a seasonal treat, kick back near the stage, and let the music set the rhythm for your festival fun. Dancing is highly encouraged — boots optional.
Shop, Snack and Stroll
Over 100 local vendors and food trucks set the stage for endless browsing and grazing. Shop for handmade treasures, sample fall-flavored treats and follow your nose to whatever smells too good to pass up.
Round up your favorite people, pull on that snuggly sweater and step into a downtown bursting with fall magic. Giant pumpkins will wow you, seasonal flavors will tempt you and flying gourds will have you cheering like a kid again. This isn’t just a festival.
