There are plenty of signs that fall has arrived in Rapid City. Cooler mornings settle over the Black Hills. Leaves begin to turn. Sweaters find their way back into the rotation.
Then, for one Saturday in September, pumpkins start flying through the air.
The Great Downtown Pumpkin Festival returns Saturday, Sept. 19, bringing one of Rapid City's biggest annual celebrations to the heart of downtown. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the stretch between Main Street Square and Memorial Park fills with more than 100 vendors, food trucks, live music, family activities, enormous pumpkins, and a few traditions you probably won't find at your average fall festival.
Admission is free, so come downtown and see where the day takes you.
See How Big a Pumpkin Can Really Get
Forget the pumpkins stacked outside the grocery store. The ones arriving for the Giant Pumpkin Weigh-Off play in an entirely different weight class.
Growers bring their biggest contenders downtown before the festival begins, then everyone gets to watch as these massive gourds hit the scale at Main Street Square. The weigh-off begins at 10 a.m., with the winners announced at noon.
It's the kind of spectacle that makes you stop, stare, and wonder how anyone managed to get that pumpkin here in the first place.
Watch Pumpkins Take Flight
This is where Rapid City puts its own spin on a fall tradition.
During Pumpkin Chunkin', catapults built by students from South Dakota Mines send pumpkins sailing across Memorial Park. Equal parts engineering experiment and crowd-pleasing spectacle, it's become one of the festival's signature sights.
There are three chances to catch the action in 2026, with rounds scheduled for 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m. in Memorial Park.
Find a good viewing spot, keep your eyes on the sky, and prepare to cheer for a pumpkin.
Put Your Pumpkin on Display
Some pumpkins are grown to break records. Others are destined for a little paint, personality, and friendly competition.
The Pumpkin Decorating Contest returns to Main Street Square, where festivalgoers can check out the entries and vote for their favorite from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Bring the Kids
There's a lot packed into a few downtown blocks for younger festivalgoers.
The Kidz Zone opens at 10 a.m. with jumping castles, pumpkin painting, the 4 Buck Chuck, face painting, and more. Touch-A-Truck also runs throughout the festival in the City Hall parking lot, giving kids the chance to get an up-close look at the big vehicles they usually only see passing by.
The festival itself is free. Individual activities are available for purchase, including jumping castles for $12, the 4 Buck Chuck for $4, and pumpkin painting for $5. A $15 KidZone Pass includes all three.
Shop, Eat, and Stay Awhile
The pumpkins might get top billing, but half the fun is everything happening around them.
More than 100 vendors join the festival, giving you plenty to browse as you move between Main Street Square and Memorial Park. Food trucks keep the day fueled, and live music takes over Main Street Square from noon to 4 p.m.
And because you're already downtown, keep exploring. Step into a local shop, grab a table at a nearby restaurant, wander among the City of Presidents, or make another lap through the festival because you spotted something you somehow missed the first time.

The Great Downtown Pumpkin Festival isn't a quiet introduction to fall. It arrives with giant gourds, crowded streets, catapults, food trucks, live music, and enough orange to make the season official.
