Spend a little time in downtown Rapid City and you will inevitably end up at Main Street Square.
Kids dart through the fountains on warm summer afternoons. Live music echoes across the plaza during evening concerts. Families gather for festivals, movies, and holiday celebrations. When winter arrives, the space transforms again as skaters circle the ice beneath glowing downtown lights.
Today, Main Street Square feels like the natural heart of downtown Rapid City. It is where the community comes together.
But the story behind this vibrant public space is one of bold vision, community collaboration, and a belief that downtown Rapid City could become something extraordinary.
A Bold Idea for Downtown Rapid City
Before Main Street Square opened in 2011, the corner of 6th and Main looked very different.
For years, the area was simply a parking lot surrounded by aging buildings. While downtown still had character and history, there was no central place for the community to gather. No plaza for concerts, festivals, or public celebrations. No true “town square” where locals and visitors could connect.
Local leaders and business owners began imagining something different.
What if Rapid City had a vibrant public square right in the middle of downtown? A place where families could gather, where events could take place year round, and where the surrounding blocks could thrive with new shops, restaurants, and local businesses.
It was an ambitious idea. Transforming an entire city block into a welcoming public space would take vision, investment, and a lot of community support.
But Rapid City was ready for the challenge.
Overcoming the Obstacles
Turning the idea of Main Street Square into reality was not simple.
One of the biggest hurdles sat directly beside the proposed plaza site. A longtime adult video store occupied a prominent location next to the future square. For a space designed to be family friendly and community focused, the surrounding environment mattered.
Mitzi Lally voiced her concern about the neighboring tenants to her brother and local entrepreneur Ray Hillenbrand, who stepped in with an unconventional solution. Working with partners and community supporters, he quietly purchased the business and surrounding properties in order to reshape the block and make room for the new vision.
That effort set the stage for something much larger.
As the project gained momentum, additional buildings around the future square were purchased, restored, and prepared for new life. Instead of filling storefronts with national chains, the goal was clear. The surrounding businesses would reflect the local character of Rapid City and the Black Hills.
Dozens of entrepreneurs applied for the limited storefront spaces. The final group of businesses was carefully chosen to create a vibrant mix of restaurants, boutiques, galleries, and gathering spaces that would bring energy to downtown day and night.
One of the beloved storefronts surrounding Main Street Square today, Mitzi’s Books, is named in honor of Mitzi Lally, whose gentle encouragement and quiet determination inspired those around her to dream bigger for downtown Rapid City. Mitzi passed away in 2011 before the square was completed, but her spirit remains woven into the space. Today, her warm, smiling face lives on as the logo of the cozy bookstore that bears her name.
A Downtown Transformation
When Main Street Square officially opened in 2011, the transformation was immediate.
What had once been a quiet parking lot became a lively public plaza filled with movement, music, and community connection.
The design of the square reflected the spirit of Rapid City itself. At the center sits a large open plaza surrounded by locally owned shops and restaurants. Interactive fountains create a playful space for children during the summer months. An outdoor stage hosts concerts and live entertainment. Public art and gathering areas invite visitors to linger a little longer.
The square quickly became a place where everyday moments and special celebrations happen side by side.
During the day, visitors explore downtown boutiques, grab lunch on a sunny patio, or cool off near the fountains. In the evenings, the plaza fills with live music, festivals, and community events that bring the entire city together.
A Place For Every Season
One of the reasons Main Street Square has become such a beloved destination is its ability to transform throughout the year.
Summer is filled with energy. Children splash through the fountains while families relax in the plaza. Concerts, movies in the square, and festivals bring crowds downtown, creating a lively atmosphere that feels both local and welcoming.
Fall adds a golden glow to the surrounding streets as events continue and downtown restaurants buzz with activity.
When winter arrives, the square takes on a completely different personality. The fountains are replaced with an outdoor ice skating rink (which, for the record, is larger than the iconic ice rink at Rockefeller Center) that becomes one of the most popular winter attractions in the city. Skaters glide across the ice while holiday lights illuminate downtown, turning the square into a festive gathering place during the colder months.
Spring brings the return of festivals, farmers markets, and community celebrations that signal the start of another vibrant season.
No matter the time of year, something is always happening at Main Street Square.
The Heart of Downtown Rapid City
Fifteen years after it first opened, Main Street Square has become something even bigger than its founders imagined.
It is the setting for some of Rapid City’s most beloved traditions, from concerts and festivals to community celebrations and holiday events. It is where locals meet friends, families bring their kids to play, and visitors experience the welcoming spirit of downtown Rapid City for the first time.
Just steps away from the square, you will find locally owned shops, restaurants serving everything from comfort food to creative cuisine, art galleries showcasing regional talent, and the iconic City of Presidents statues that line downtown streets.
Main Street Square sits at the center of it all.
What once started as a bold idea is now the living room of Rapid City. A place where the community gathers, stories unfold, and visitors discover the energy that makes this city special.
