Main Street Square Celebrates 15 Years
What Started as a Parking Lot is Now a Gathering Place for Rapid City
Main Street Square is celebrating 15 years with a free anniversary celebration planned for this Thursday, October 8, from 4-7 p.m. The event will include magic shows, face painting, balloons and Tito, the beverage burro.
What started as an underutilized parking lot in the heart of Downtown Rapid City is now a place where the community gathers, celebrates and creates memories. From concerts and festivals to summer days at the fountain and winter ice skating, Main Street Square has become a backdrop for countless memories. Today, it hosts over 200 days of programming annually.
“While this is a celebration, it’s also a thank you to the innovative thinkers, the generous givers and the people who relentlessly advocated for this space to become what it is today,” said Callie Meyer, Director of Community Engagement for Visit Rapid City. “This is now a gathering place for our community, locals and visitors, and is an anchor for our downtown.”
The creation of Main Street Square was the result of a bold vision and a community-wide effort. Over the last 15 years, there have been many people and organizations – including the Dakota Charitable Foundation, John T. Vucurevich Foundation, Bush Foundation, City of Rapid City, donors, sponsors, consultants, contractors and the downtown business community – that have worked to bring this to life.
Main Street Square’s legacy has also been watched over and shaped by the many staff members and board members who have dedicated their time, ideas and energy to this space. And while many people have donated to Main Street Square, the community has also embraced it.
“Main Street Square is special for a lot of reasons, but also because of all the people who utilize it,” added Meyer. “For 15 years, Rapid City has done exactly that. This has become a gathering place for moments big and small, with countless memories being made here. That’s what this place was built to do and we can’t wait to celebrate it.”
Since opening, Main Street Square has become an important part of the downtown experience for both residents and visitors. Plus, it plays an important role in the downtown business community, bringing people into the heart of Rapid City and creating opportunities for residents and visitors to support local restaurants, shops and businesses.
