The downtown campus includes several interconnected venues, led by Summit Arena, which seats more than 10,000 spectators. The arena has the scale and flexibility to host major basketball tournaments, wrestling championships, rodeos, and other large-format competitions.
The Barnett Fieldhouse and exhibit halls provide additional space for tournament play, practices, warmups, and event operations. The 5,000-seat Ice Arena gives hockey, figure skating, and other ice sports a dedicated home inside the same multi-venue complex. Together, these spaces allow planners to build an entire event footprint without spreading teams and spectators across the city.
Diamonds With Depth
Baseball runs deep in Rapid City, and Fitzgerald Stadium stands at the center of it.
Known locally as “The Fitz,” the historic ballpark features the all-turf Dave Ploof Field, seating for more than 2,500 fans, and a Black Hills backdrop rising beyond the outfield. It is built for championship innings, packed grandstands, and the kind of moments players remember long after the final out.
The city’s baseball lineup goes well beyond one stadium. Pete Lien Memorial Field, Canyon Lake Little League Complex, Harney Baseball Complex, and several additional diamonds give organizers options for different ages, divisions, and tournament formats.
Softball brings just as much depth. Star of the West Complex features eight softball fields, along with seven fields that can accommodate lacrosse. The Parkview Sports Complex, Rushmore Girls Softball Complex, and Whitehead Softball Complex add even more room for brackets to grow and games to keep moving.
Field Sports With Room to Run
Big field tournaments need space, smart layouts, and the ability to keep multiple games moving. Rapid City delivers all three.
The Black Hills Surgical Sports Complex at Dakota Fields covers nearly 80 acres and can be configured with a dozen full-sized fields. The complex gives soccer, lacrosse, and football events the room to host youth divisions, adult competition, and large tournament fields in one location.
Additional soccer spaces include the Cambell Street Polo Fields, Minnesota Field, Mountain View Field, Nordermeer Field at Sioux Park, and Sioux San Fields. Star of the West expands the city’s lacrosse capacity, giving planners several ways to structure their event.
For football and track and field, Dunham Field at O’Harra Stadium brings a collegiate atmosphere to the competition. Located on the South Dakota Mines campus, the stadium regularly hosts football games, track meets, and other athletic events inside a setting shaped by Rapid City’s natural terrain.
Rodeo, Motorsports and Arena Action
Some sports belong on hardwood. Others demand dirt, horsepower, and a little more grit.
The Central States Fairgrounds delivers the flexibility to host rodeos, motorsports, livestock competitions, and major indoor events. The property includes three arenas and the 118,000-square-foot James Kjerstad Event Center, along with indoor courts that can accommodate basketball, volleyball, and soccer.
Rodeo also takes center stage at Summit Arena, home to Rodeo Rapid City and other major western sporting events. In Rapid City, South Dakota’s official state sport gets the space, crowd, and game-day energy it deserves.
Precision, Speed and Individual Competition
Rapid City’s facility lineup stretches beyond traditional team sports.
The newly opened Pete Lien & Sons Shooting Sports Complex covers 400 acres of rolling terrain and expands the region’s ability to host shooting competitions. The facility was designed to support everyday use along with major national and international events.
Across the city, additional venues support tennis, swimming, racquetball, disc golf, BMX, sand volleyball, horseshoes, and running events. Parkview Tennis Complex and Sioux Park each feature 12 tennis courts, while Roosevelt Swim Center provides two indoor pools. Disc golf courses, a BMX track at Robbinsdale Park, and an all-weather running track at Sioux Park add even more possibilities to Rapid City’s sports roster.
More Capacity Is Coming

Rapid City is not finished building.
Opening in summer 2028, the new Rapid City Sports Complex will add eight basketball courts that can convert into 16 volleyball courts. The facility will also include a hybrid turf area, sprint lanes, training space, batting cages, a dedicated sports performance zone, and flexible event space.
The complex will give planners even more capacity for multi-court tournaments, indoor field sports, baseball and softball training, and large events that bring several divisions together for one competition-filled weekend.
