When my husband and I set a goal to visit all 50 states, there were a handful I knew I’d instantly love for their mountains, food scenes, or perfect weather. But what made the journey even more meaningful were the places that took me completely by surprise—underrated destinations that I can’t stop thinking about even years later.

Top of that list? South Dakota. It’s the one state I’m always telling people they have to see for themselves to understand how underrated it truly is. Packed with incredible state and national parks, it’s far less touristy than many other states. 

Add in historic towns that reflect the region’s Western roots and cities with surprisingly impressive food scenes, and you’ve got a destination that punches above its weight. Here are the spots that won me over.
