Railroad executive Alex Carlton Johnson opened Rapid City’s first hotel in 1928. Hotel Alex Johnson paid tribute to the local Lakota Sioux tribe, featuring everything from sculpted Native American heads at the entrance to the sacred four directions symbols in the lobby tiles.
