• One of his fingers was permanently bent due to a peanut-farming accident when he was young
• He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his decades of effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development
• On November 4, 1979, 60 Americans from the U.S. embassy in Teheran, Iran were taken hostage. Iran finally released 52 of the hostages the same day Carter left office
