  • He served as a supreme commander of Allied forces during World War II and led a massive invasion of Nazi-occupied Europe that began on D-Day
  • At the Potsdam Conference in July of 1945, when he was a general, he was among those who opposed the use of the atomic bomb against Hiroshima and Nagasaki
  • He sent troops to Little Rock, Arkansas in 1957 to enforce the integration of a high school there
