While Rapid City is an excellent summer destination, we are equally fun in the winter months. Our main parks, monuments and memorials are open with less crowds for you to enjoy and many festive activities take place all winter long.
Start your winter adventure at Mount Rushmore National Memorial. Mornings at the monument are especially beautiful. Frost-flocked pines and the sun shining on the monument will mean you get a unique perspective of the park, so don’t forget your camera. Warm up with coffee and share breakfast with the presidents at the Carver’s Café.
Visit Downtown Rapid City and the Shops at Main Street Square, to find perfect, one-of-a-kind holiday gifts. After finding lunch at one of the many great downtown eateries, lace up some skates and hit the rink at Main Street Square. The rink is open from the late November through the end of February.
There are many great evening entertainment options during the winter months. Enjoy dinner downtown and then Storybook Island’s Christmas Nights of Light from Thanksgiving through the New Year. Or for more excitement, take in a Rapid City Rush hockey game at The Monument, formerly known as the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center. The ECHL team plays home games against division rivals all winter long. If you happen to be visiting during the end of January, you won’t want to miss the action-packed Black Hills Stock Show and Rodeo, a week-long event including a tradeshow, art show, sheep dog trials, champion cattle shows, horse shows and various competitive rodeo events.
