Explore the Outdoors in Rapid City
One of the best features of Rapid City is its proximity to a multitude of outdoor recreational opportunities. In September 2015, Rapid City was named the #4 Readers’ Choice Best Destination for Outdoor Enthusiasts by USA Today 10 Best. You came to the right place for adventure!
Grab your mountain bike or lace up your boots for a hike or ride on one of the single-track trails located minutes from downtown. Hanson-Larsen Memorial Park offers nearly 20 miles of trails for every skill level. With sweeping views of the Black Hills and Rapid City, the trails are a favorite among locals.
Looking for outdoors on the lighter side? Hit the links at one of Rapid City’s many golf courses. Many of the challenging courses follow rushing creeks, are surrounded by large hardwood and pine trees and offer great views of Rapid City.
Make a splash and hit one of the area’s 17 lakes. Within the city, Canyon Lake offers paddle boat and canoe rentals. Minutes from Rapid City, Pactola and Sheridan Lake have boat launches, beaches, and canoe and kayak rentals. Lake time in the hills is the easiest way to cool down on a hot afternoon.
Catch the sunset and catch some fish at one of the lakes or streams located near Rapid City. After catching your limit, have dinner at Dakotah Steakhouse. The restaurant’s distinctive South Dakota menu is sure to please an outdoor enthusiast’s palate. The Walleye Fingers, Buffalo Satay and Elk Ravioli are some favorites.
Extend your outdoor adventures at Outdoor Campus West for outdoor skills, Custer State Park, or Badlands National Park. Too much to choose from? Black Hills Adventure Tours offers full service guided adventure tours. Your opportunities are endless!
