The South Dakota Program for Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship (SD IGERT) provides an opportunity for doctoral candidates at the University of South Dakota, South Dakota State University, or the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology to work together on improving the cost and efficiency of capturing solar energy.



The ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC), one of the most prestigious programming competitions in the world is taking place in May 2017 at The Monument, formerly known as the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center. The contest involves a global network of universities hosting regional competitions that advance teams to the ACM¬ICPC World Finals.



The National Science Foundation Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) site offers a unique 10-week summer research program focused on integrated research experiences. This program involves intersecting Metallurgical Engineering with prevailing historical, social or artistic themes throughout Rapid City to provide a unique historical and cultural framework for current research.



The West River Math Contest for middle school-aged students in South Dakota takes place annually during the month of May. The competition is prepared and scored by the faculty of the Mathematics and Computer Science Department at the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology in Rapid City, where the competition is held.

Much of Rapid City's pioneer era history is documented at The Journey Museum & Learning Center. The museum is also home to the Sioux Indian Museum which preserves and interprets one of the finest collections of Sioux Indian craftwork and fine art in the country. Through a public-private partnership with the City of Rapid City, the Rapid City Arts Council provides artistic and cultural development for the community, and visiting students and educators alike! The RCAC manages the Dahl Arts Center and inspires creativity and innovation through visual arts, performing arts, and arts education programs. The Dahl also supports artists, and arts organizations in and around Rapid City.
