A True Wild West Experience Found In Custer State Park

Raised in Rapid City and lucky to call it home, this outdoor enthusiast loves to explore the Black Hills with her husband and two dogs. When she’s not at work you’ll find her out hiking, at a local ice cream shop, or perhaps home taking a nap.

Rounding up a herd of nearly 1,450 buffalo is no joke. It's an important event that takes place every September, and it's a ground shaking good time - literally. During the Custer State Park Buffalo Roundup horseback riders work to roundup the herd. It's an event that's not only spectacular to watch, but also a critical management tool the park implements to maintain a strong and health herd. This is a popular event for locals and visitors so we highly recommend arriving early!
