During McKinley's time in office, Hawaii was annexed. This would be the first step towards statehood for the island territory. One final important act during McKinley's time in office was the Gold Standard Act where by the U.S. was officially placed on the gold standard. President McKinley started wearing carnations in his lapel that were presented to him by a friend, Dr. Levi Lamborn who was also his opponent for a congressional seat. Lamborn always gave him one before a debate. He won the Congressional election and associated the carnation with his success. McKinley was shot two times by anarchist Leon Czolgosz while the president was visiting the Pan-American Exhibit in Buffalo, New York minutes after giving the lucky scarlet carnation from his lapel to a young girl who wanted a souvenir. To commemorate his tragic death, the sculptor gave him a red carnation. http://www.whitehouse.gov/about/presidents/williammckinley
