Perched on the eastern slopes of South Dakota’s Black Hills, Rapid City encompasses both prairie and mountain, a convergence of landscapes that many residents and visitors find extraordinarily beautiful. Fortunately, the city has taken its stewardship of its gorgeous park-like setting seriously.

That’s one of the reasons why city planners set aside 71 acres of prime land along the banks of Rapid Creek for the Central States Fairgrounds. This major events facility, just minutes from historic downtown and easily accessible from Highway 44 and Interstate 90, regularly accommodates sporting events ranging in size from small groups of 25 to major championships with thousands of spectators.

With a grandstand that seats 6,000 and parking facilities for at least 8,000 vehicles, the Central States Fairgrounds is no stranger to major events. Its 225-unit campground, over 40,000 square feet of indoor exhibit space and eight acres of outdoor asphalt display area come in handy, too. Of course, there’s also the indoor arena and events center, a favorite location for indoor motocross, equestrian events and trade shows.
