Mid-Morning: Dinosaur Park
After you’ve discovered the history of the Black Hills, head to Skyline Drive in Rapid City to discover seven giant, concrete dinos. Dinosaur Park, originally built in the 1930s, is on the National Register of Historic Places and us one of Rapid City’s most popular parks. The massive concrete Apatosaurus sits high atop a ridge that splits Rapid City in half and is visible from nearly every corner of the city.
Late Afternoon/Evening: The Mammoth Site
Just a few more miles from Hill City, you’ll find the world’s largest mammoth research facility and an ongoing palentological dig site in Hot Springs. Nearly 55 Columbian Wooly Mammoth fossils have been unearthed, as well as the remains of giant short-faced bear, camel, llama, prairie dog, wolf, fish, and numerous invertebrates.
