Rapid City has changed considerably since the Hotel Alex Johnson was constructed nearly a century ago, but the hotel still remains a center of activity in the downtown district. Built in the roaring twenties by a railroader who had a flair for luxury, the Hotel Alex Johnson  is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a landmark of the downtown skyline - a short walk from the Civic Center. Johnson held a deep respect for the Sioux culture, apparent upon entrance into the lobby. The original Sioux design motifs have been meticulously maintained and remain as they were when the hotel was built.

This award-winning, service-oriented hotel features 143 guest rooms, including a 7-room Presidential Suite and Bridal Suite, the Vertex Skybar, Paddy O'Neill's Pub & Casino and the Alex Johnson Mercantile. The Hotel Alex Johnson  has played host to five U.S. Presidents.
