Year-Round Weather Information for Rapid City
Rapid City is in the heart of South Dakota’s own “banana belt” as summer and winter weather tends to be milder than the surrounding areas.
Spring
Sunny days and spring rains encourage trees to bud and flowers to bloom in April and May in Rapid City. Temperatures range from the 40s to the 80s as summer approaches. As the sun goes down so do the temperatures, so bring a jacket for evening activities.
Summer
The warmest days of the year for Rapid City occur from June to August. The temperature on summer days is generally around 70-80 degrees, but can reach the 100s occasionally. Even the hottest Rapid City days are made bearable by the Chinook breezes and low humidity. Summer is a great time to enjoy outdoor attractions and scenery, but evenings can be cool, so remember your jacket.
Fall
Autumn is a great time to visit Rapid City. Warm September days are great for soaking in the vibrant fall colors. Crisp November nights are perfect for camp fires and hikes before the first hint of snow. The average highs for fall range from the 60s to 70s with evening temperatures dipping down to the 40s.
Winter
Colder temperatures bring a new array of activities to Rapid City and the Black Hills area. Wintry cold spells usually alternate with mild weather, making the Black Hills a great place to enjoy winter sports, such as skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing and snowmobiling. Air inversions occasionally develop at the foot of the Black Hills trapping warm air over the city and shielding Rapid City from frigid temperatures.
